The tension provided by dank claustrophobia and threat of suffocation, as air supplies dwindle, makes this house a very scary place to be. The ghoulies that eventually materialize within don’t have to be so original, or terrifying — the situation itself makes for discomfiting viewing. The actors aren’t given a lot to work with here, though surely much was demanded of them, or at least of their diving stand-ins (Justin & Thibault Rauby, given prominent end-credits billing). But if these otherwise game leads don’t create complex or memorable characters here, well, no one could, and no one is asking them to anyway.

The Deep House premiered earlier this year at the Fantasia Film Festival - we posted the teaser trailer back then. A young couple goes to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on YouTube as part of their passion for "urbex" - the exploration of hard-to-find, abandoned urban edifices and buildings. However, they end up with a change of plans when they enter the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of a secluded lake and their presence awakens a spirit dark that haunts the house… Starring Camille Rowe and James Jagger, with Eric Savin.

The Montégnacs then turn on Tina, but she escapes up the shaft, which leads back into the lake. But just below the water's surface, the remaining air in her lungs gives out, and she drowns. Their next stop is in southwestern France, where Ben follows a tip that proves disappointing until they meet a local man (Eric Savin) who claims to know where to find something very special. That would be an intact entire house submerged by flood waters half a century ago, located a good drive and a lengthy hike away. Finally arriving at the designated lake’s edge, they suit up and dive in, Tina the more skittish of the two as usual. They have the technology to continue talking to one another beneath the surface; both also have lights and cameras, their additional filming “crew” being a drone they call Tom.

Ben and Tina are a young engaged New York couple and passionate YouTube contributors who are travelling Europe and seeking out reputedly haunted houses to live-record their experiences. One day, they go to south-west France to seek out a sanatorium submerged in an artificial lake, only to find it a crowded vacation spot. A local, Pierre, offers to take them to an isolated branch of the lake in the forest of Chanteloup, an area which was artificially submerged in 1984 to prevent frequently recurring, devastating floods.
On dry land, “The Deep House’s” script wouldn’t be much — Ben’s observance that the residents must have been up to some “Satanic shit” is as much explanation as we’re afforded for what ensues. Nor are all the horror tropes utilized as effective underwater, given the necessitated slow movement, and occasional visual incoherence when a character and their body-cam struggle against some force amidst swirling bubbles or dislodged debris. The film was released in France on 30 June 2021 by Apollo Films and released in the United States on 5 November 2021 by Blumhouse Productions and Epix.
Curious, Ben removes the masks from the corpses, revealing them to be the Montégnacs, the family who owned the house. As they try to escape through a chimney, the shaft collapses, trapping them on different floors. In an upstairs bedroom, Ben finds a family tree featuring Pierre, revealing him as the Montégnacs' son and indicating that he lured them to the house on purpose, before he is attacked by an undead girl - the Montégnacs' daughter Sarah - and possessed by her. When Tina finds him, he leads her to a hidden sitting room in the basement where Sarah, through Ben and a gruesome film reel, reveals that Mr. Montégnac and Pierre kidnapped children from the surrounding area to use as satanic sacrifices. The elder Montégnacs and Sarah were eventually killed by an avenging mob, but Pierre managed to escape. The Deep House stars James Jagger and Camille Rowe, and as I previously mentioned, Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are the writer-directors.

"There she is…" Paramount + EPIX have revealed a new official US trailer for The Deep House, one of two new films from French horror filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury arriving this year - along with Kandisha.
This horror film was shot almost entirely underwater, in a submerged tank, with underwater DP Jacques Ballard. The new horror film from Inside filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo follows a pair of YouTubers who dive down into a sunken house only to discover they're not alone. In other words, this sounds like a haunted house movie where the house is underwater, and that's a neat idea we haven't really seen before.
After the credits, there is a brief scene in which two new divers look out over the lake, accompanied by Pierre. Currently streaming on Shudder is their most recent 2020 effort, "Kandisha," which follows three childhood friends who have possibly, accidentally, maybe invoked a malevolent spirit. As Amélie (Mathilde Lamusse), Bintou (Suzy Bemba), and Morjana (Samarcande Saadi) enjoy their summer break after a harmless conjuring game, bodies start dropping and all evidence points to a curse that only the young women have the power to stop.
The area he is leading them to contains a mansion which he claims has remained perfectly preserved. While diving, they get locked inside the structure with no way out, awakening a dark spirit in the process. Reaching the spot, Ben and Tina submerge, finding the house in a short while, with its contents strangely well-preserved. In addition, in some of the rooms they find lots of photos, posters and news articles showing missing children, as well as satanic symbols and a score of violent scratches at the front door post. In the kitchen, they discover a door blocked by a large crucifix, and opening it, they enter a room containing two corpses in chains and torture masks suspended above a satanic pentagram, and a side room filled with pickled human body parts.
"Kandisha" dropped on Shudder back in July, and anyone who has watched it can testify that Maury and Bustillo still know how to keep the thrills and scares coming, so "The Deep House" will be one to watch. It's called Kandisha, and it follows a group of teenagers, Amélie, Bintou, and Morjana, hanging out during summer break.
